I'm updating this here with pics of a kinky baby from Hua's litter as its definitly not rex, as if they were rex the whole litter would be rex.. remember out of 7 babies 3 were Kinky the rest were standard.. so I wanted to make sure that since they don't have a real record of this fur type any where other then adult pics I wanted to ensure that this is also readily available.

also Note, it took me a little over a year to breed coffee, he has been with numerous females that all produced babies with other bucks. he was with Hua' for over 2 and half months before she took. I totally believe the reduced fertility there..

Coffee is 1 year , and will be 2 next  June 2011.. so I will keep track if the longivity is shorter on my kinky line as stated by Ratbehavior.org.

Enjoy..

you can see how thin the fur is and the number of cowlicks it has

notice the cowlicks on his back, and the thinness of the coat. NO top coat.

Kinky Whiskers 1

Kinky Whiskers 2

Dense kinky fur. over the back.. very rough to the touch not as soft as the baby coat.

from the shoulders back, Notice the bald spot near the left of the pic.. this is Coffees shoulder

Revised Personal Experience by Me ( Dec. 25, 2010 )

So watching these babies grow is amazing, what I have found out with the Kinky strain is worth more then what you can read in any docu. but I figure I can try,  so out of the 3 babies I have 2 confirmed Kinkies and one little Carrier..  The kinky pictured is Luck.. thought to be fawn but more champange now, which is hard to tell because the fur is sooo freaking different. I have watch them all molt once already and with the following picture you will be able to see that the kinkies are already getting the bald spots around the shoulder area and hip..( that didn't come up on pics so good ) but they are starting to change texture, they felt really rough smooth as babies, now at the current molt stage they are super fluffy and almost as soft as silk, the fur being kinky is very cool. the one little Kinky carrier actually started developing Cowlicks this molt around the inside of his legs, and a small one seems to be forming around his shoulders. Now its not as pronounced as the Kinky born babies but still pretty cool.  I've also noticed the way these guys grow seem to be different too, it could just be my eyes playing tricks on me. or not.. but they seem to be growing wide then out.. so fat, then skinny when they grow in length and then fat again..  as far as health they seem to be extremely healthily, bouncing around like babies should, eating healthy, and etc.  Any whom enjoy the updated pics.  the babies approx 1 and half months now.. I didn't look in my DB so its a rough guess..  i'm sure its almost two months.. 8 weeks.. as weaning period is coming soon..  even though they are still nursing from mom..so when ever they seem to be ready.

here you can see the bald spots in the shoulders already forming

so updating again, I found that during the molt at 3 months, the Kinky loses all the kink to the fur and it gets really short like when they are babies just getting the fur, but when it comes back in O BOY you have to be prepared for the fur texture, it definitely doesn't get soft ever again after the 3 week age point.  So the older the rougher, as you can see from  ARS Lucks updated pictures he is already developing the bald spot on his shoulders. I've also noticed that yes it does effect the eyes to the point that the rats seem to scab them up fairly quickly, even though it doesn't seem to effect the vision on the rats, I have to keep a close eye on toe nails and ensure that they are trimmed,  I don't know if with time the rats learn not to harm their own eyes. Only time will tell! Enjoy the updated pictures.!

Here you can see the bald spot, and how much more defined the kink is in his fur.

As elegant as ever. ARS Luck, is sure the looker and even my hubby has fallen into the coolness of the Kinky

So watching my dear little ARS Luck grow up and develop has been really interesting and fascinating, During all his molts his fur has begun to get rougher and course to the touch and not at all soft. He has lost some of the kinky in his fur, but that was to be expected since he isn't 100% kinky, being Coffee (Kinky) x Hua' (Harley). But even though his Kinky fur straighten out some, I have seen it come back in spurts over the last few days, he has actually developed this very cool, mohawk across his back where his cowlick is.. The fur on his cowlick is very short compared to the rest of his fur. But do that he is going through another molt I'm not sure what he will look like in a week from not, and like his dad Coffee, his fur growth and lose doesn't seem to be keeping up with the breakage in the fur, He is still very thin in coat around his shoulders and will probably end up going bald fairly soon come in the next few months or so.  So here are some updated pictures of ARS Luck.. I've also got some good pics of his Kinky Whiskers, Gotta love new Kodak Cameras. Anywhom , enjoy. I will put subtext to most of the pictures.

Here you can see the Mohawk somewhat, and how thin his coat is in that area, to the point of going bald.  As this is the mobile area, it is expected. but you can also see that his fur isn't as smooth as a standard coated rat. This is due tot he kinky gene.. His fur is extremely rough!

Here is another great shot of his Mohawk,  and how it compares on how short his fur is around his shoulder, compared to the rest of his body.

I like this shot because it shows his fur, and the un-smoothiness it has. You can see the different layers of the fur and how its 100% not totally smooth.  And can give you an idea of the roughness it has.

Great shot of the Kinky Whiskers,  They are curved down words, vs striaght out like a Standard, and don't curl like Rex, and look totally different when compared to other coat types, As with most, the Whiskers usually stay the same regardless of how faded the coat gets with age.  So this is a great picture, and Does compare to the pictures of the whiskers, on the page 1 of the kinky information site.

Here, is a great shot from the top,  He has a nice coat.

This is a great shot of both his whiskers, and fur texture close up. Here you can really see the roughness in his coat, and some kink to it.

My pretty boys, pretty nose and his whiskers.. again, but that look is prizeless..LOL
will update again in a month or two.

March. 21, 2010

So its been a few months and my boy has molted like 3-4 times since then, his ever rougher growing fur is starting to break off when I pet him, kinda like petting a cat that is going through the seasonal shedding season. Its really weird and yet so fascinating. So here are some updated pics of my boy, he has grown ever so energetic it has become increasingly hard to get good clear pictures of him, but I have tried after over 100+ pictures I got a few clear ones so here they are.

As you can see from the following pictures, his back end seems to have calmed down some from the kinky fur to a very rough standard coat, the kinky cowlick has stayed up around his shoulders to about his rib cage, this is where its still seems to be staying pretty consistent between molts and such. His mohawk seems to be going even stronger to the point that is a defining point on him that makes him stand out in the colony like a bullseye. I"ve noticed that between him and his half-sisters and brothers which are posted on my Roan Page, who have slowly lost most of the kink in their fur . He is keeping it, I'm thinking its because they lack the one mutation they need to keep it.   Either way its really interesting and I'm hoping that with further breedings I can see how well this coat type is to keep in the rattery.

Right now ARS Luck is very special, a little overly active for a male, but boy does he love his attention. I think that is one trait that keeps my kinkies apart from my other rats. They are so overly playful and adventurous like their dad it drives me crazy..LOL

So far no major health issues. Luck and Coffee have both started showing discharge, but i pin that on the crazy weather I'm having and the fact the rattery room window is still open all day long.. so slight colds.. no sneezing just discharge. so dust related. Okay enjoy the pics..

Here you can see the mohawk down his spin and how it stops right near the end of the rib cage with the kinky fur stops and the standard starts.. what a weird rat..LOL

Nice side view of his fur. it looks soft, but it isn't.. *sniff*

This was my attempt to smooth the coat down. Yeah..um.. didn't work so well you can see it didn't stay down flat and started to spring back again .

Shows a good cowlick or two here around his neck and behind his shoulders.

Sometimes the best picture is the one from the front..LOL here you can the craziness that is his fur!!..  he is such a cute boy..

Jan. 23, 2012

Wow, can't believe I haven't updated this in a few months. So update on the kinky

Still very rough, and cowlicks make bald-spots. Now what I have noticed is that the rats fur holds dirt so much more..ugh.. bathing is usually done every two weeks, just to keep the fur clean. Due to the cowlicks its kinda like a person with a perm, it just holds dirt, dust and all kinds of stuff. The Great thing about the Kinky fur is one. The bucks don't get that much buck grease, due to the air ration of the fur. The fur stays dry no greasy build up. And for this reason I have never had any of my bucks fight for any type of hierarchy in the cages. No alpha at all, now isn't that great. Any whom I've attached more pics of my handsome ARS Lucky.  He is a chunky one..

Nice picture of his left side.

Nice picture of his right  side, You can see the bald spots in his fur.

Great shot of his back.  You can see the bald-spot s on his shoulders.

Yeah, no words can describe this other then totally KINKY..lol

Nothing is cuter then a rattie grooming himself..LOL

I've decided to add ARS Lucky's half-brother here too.  Same father Coffee of ARS, just a different mom. Enjoy

Here you can see what makes the kinkies so different. the Cowlicks all over the backside of their bodies.  Very cute don't you think.
