The "Mouse" Dumbos of ARS
Breeding time frame of this line 2008-2011 ( and still being continued )
I’ve been asked by several of my breeder friends and rat
lovers to post more info on my “Mouse” Dumbos. Let me first state, I will not
be adding any genetic info on the variety here because its so new and really I’m
still figuring it out myself.
Some History.
The “Mouse” Dumbo, was actually a dare brought to me several
years ago before my brain tumor on if it was possible to breed floppy eared rats.
Of course you rat savvy people are going to be like. “ No its not possible!! “,
well see this is where the dare came in, I have a breeder friend of mine DARE
me to breed Floppy eared rats. This is a huge task and challenge as ONE where
do you start, and TWO is it even possible. So for the one year where I was
without rats I wrote down a huge notebook full of notes, about how I would go
about breeding Floppy eared rats.
When I was able to get back into breeding I told my Sissy to breed to specific
rats together for me. As I was having a shipment brought in from her anyways
why not two pregnant females right?. So she did, not really asking questions
about the whole thing and when my females had their litters about 7 days apart
I had what I wanted, A genetic mutation that I was sure was going to happen.
Again not giving info on what I did, and I’m sure my Sissy is now brewing hot
brain coffee trying to figure and remember what she did..LOL.
To The Present
Well needless to say I lost the first litter due to SDA/ and Sendai Virus. And several other rats too. But my second litter was safe and sound in a different air source in the home.
After several months I decided to breed, two of those babies
together to get my next goal going, Strengthening the trait in that line, The
litter was born and VALA the first official “Mouse” dumbos where born. Of course I kept them secret to just my self
and my Sissy for a while. Of Course no reaction from here and to this day I
still can’t figure out why not..LOL.. Any whom the first ever “Mouse” dumbo babies were Roans. No other
rat would do for this trait..LOL.
Well after several months of watching these babies grow and another note book
filled with notes I decide to try to breed the two together, with no luck. I thought okay maybe the female is sterile so
I place the buck with another doe. NO luck, then another NO LUCK. and another
WTF NO LUCK!!.. So I came to the solemn
conclusion that maybe the buck was the sterile one, I sat and watched him for
hours with a doe in heat, and he just groomed her, and played with her and no
hanky panky what so ever.. Not sterile too stupid..LOL
Okay no harm done right. He can’ breed no biggy.. Well it was a HUGE deal if I couldn’t breed this trait in then I would be at a stand still, well in the mean time I was breeding my Tort line into my roans and etc. and I had a very wise little thought hit me in the head, Why not breed the father of that litter to one of his kiddos from my tort line. Yes!! why not.. Well first let me explain I only keep what I decide to breed and sometimes its hard for me to decide what to breed because to improve my own lines I have to think really really far outside that breeder purverbule box. So I stuck the father with one of his females daughters , and she got preggos and she died during labor, I lost all the pups and it hit really close to home. Which losing any rat does but the pregnant girls especially. So I bred the second daughter to her daddy and Vala, more “Mouse” Dumbo pups, and AND AAANNNNDDDD *drumrollplease* the first ever Floppy eared rat in the history of the US and the WORLD.. nenar nenar!!! I won my dare. Any whom enjoy the pics.. LOL

Of Course I will be continuing this line as they are very quickly becoming popular in the pet community and I have a huge waiting list for breeders wanting to introduce this trait into their own lines. My goal is to get the ears really floppy like a puppy in the very near future..UM.. like end of 2012-2013 time frame..LOL
